On August 1, Acting Consul General Pam DeVolder participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at Krakow’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in honor of the 71st anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. Participants in the ceremony included veterans, local and provincial authorities, diplomatic representatives, and citizens of Krakow.
The Warsaw Uprising, which began on August 1, 1944 and lasted 63 days, was a heroic attempt by the Polish resistance Home Army (Armia Krajowa) to free Warsaw from Nazi German occupation during World War II. It was the largest single military resistance effort made by a European resistance group during the war.
