The iconic DC Comics Dawn of the Superheroes exhibition brought to Poland by the Embassy’s wonderful partner EC1 Łódź – City of Culture was officially opened on Friday, September 27 in Łódź. Cultural Affairs Officer Dan Hastings spoke at the opening, thanking EC1 Director Błażej Moder, Łódź Mayor Hanna Zdanowska and exhibition curator Jean Jacques Launier from the Art Ludique Museum in Paris for bringing the stunning, rare exhibition to Poland. Also attending as honorary guest from the United States was Jens Robison, son of Jerry Robinson, the creator of the supervillain The Joker. Jens Robinson supported the exhibition with numerous drawings authored by his father and other co-creators of the original superheroes and supervillains at DC Comics, including one of his father’s original Joker drawings in this article.
This unique exhibition – shown to date only in France, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates – will run through February 2, 2020 at EC1 Łódź. It features Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman and other superheroes and supervillians from the universe of DC Comics, one of America’s storied comic book companies. Visitors can see original costumes and movie props, drawings of famous artists (Jim Lee, Bob Kane, Neal Adams, Frank Miller and Alex Ross), a BatPod model and Batman’s Cave, original sketches and comic boards, and other behind-the-scenes materials from Warner Bros., the parent company of DC Comics. Supporting the exhibition’s appearance in Poland are Art Ludique – Le Musee, Warner Bros, and DC Entertainment. The U.S. Embassy is also a proud supporter of the exhibit and in October will bring to Poland the American author and journalist Reed Tucker who wrote the acclaimed book — Slugfest: Inside the Epic, 50-Year Battle Between Marvel and DC – about the fierce competition between the DC and Marvel comics companies.
