In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising on April 19, 1943, Ambassador Jones attended official commemorations organized by the Government of Poland at the Warsaw Ghetto Heroes Monument. Joining him from Washington, DC was Susan Sandler, the Department of State’s Deputy Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues. Earlier in the day, Ambassador Jones and the U.S. Embassy honored the heroism of the ghetto fighters by participating in the “Daffodils” social and educational campaign led by the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. Since 2013, the “Daffodils” social and educational campaign has promoted awareness of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, with over 1,000 institutions across Poland taking part this year in the handing out of paper daffodils, a traditional symbol of the heroism of the ghetto fighters. While passing out daffodils to colleagues, Ambassador Jones stressed the importance to “remember those who rose up against tyranny and inspired us with their courage and sacrifice in the face of evil.”
