After commissioning through ROTC, COL Hough served as in 3-187th IN, 3rd IBCT, 101st ABN Division (AASLT). Upon successful completion of his first assignment, COL Hough attended the Infantry Maneuver Captains Career Course (MCCC), where he received orders to XVIII Airborne Corps, Ft. Bragg, N.C.

While assigned to XVIII Airborne Corps, COL Hough served in the G-3 current operations section before earning assignment as the Company Commander for B/2-325th Airborne Infantry Regiment; he led B/2-325th’s Iraq deployment preparations in 2003. COL Hough’s performance resulted in his selection for a second command as the Commander of F Co. 51st IN (LRS) (ABN). He led F Co. through two tours to Iraq from July 2003 to April 2006.

COL Hough then served as a Small Group Leader (SGL) at the MCCC before attended the Command and General Staff College (CGSC) at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. Following CGSC, COL Hough attended the School of Advanced Military Studies.

Upon completion of his studies at Ft. Leavenworth, COL Hough served as the Executive Officer for 1-32 IN Battalion at Fort Drum, New York. He later served as the Brigade Operations Officer for 3rd IBCT, 10th MTN Division in Zaray, District Regional Command-South, Afghanistan.

In 2012, COL Hough attended the Defense Language Institute as preparation for his assignment as the Deputy Brigade Operations Officer for the Italian Army Alpini Brigade in Udine, Italy. While serving with the Italian Army, COL Hough deployed with the Brigade as the J35 for Regional Command-West, Afghanistan.

COL Hough next served as the Battalion Commander for 1st BN, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team in Ft. Wainwright, Alaska. Following command, COL Hough attended the Joint Advanced Warfighter School (JAWS) in Norfolk, VA.

Most recently, COL Hough served as the Strategic Planner for the 7th Army Training Command in Grafenwoehr, Germany.

COL Hough and his wife, Addie, have five children: Thomas, Maggie, Joey, Matt, and Sam.
