The U.S. Department of State created the AEIF in 2011 to support alumni initiatives that promote shared values and innovative solutions to global challenges. The competition provides small grants from $5,000 up to $25,000 for teams of at least two international alumni of U.S. government-sponsored exchange programs to carry out public service projects that draw on the skills and knowledge alumni have gained through their exchange experiences in the United States. Since its inception in 2011, AEIF has funded nearly 500 alumni-led projects around the world. In 2019, 64 alumni teams representing 52 countries out of more than 1,400 project submissions were selected for AEIF funding.
